Scottsdale Travel Guide: Where to Stay

where to stay in scottsdale arizona

Hello from Nashville! I finally made it back home and am running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to catch up on life. But before I go down a rabbit trail of to-do items, let's talk some more about Scottsdale, AZ. Earlier this week I shared the best places to eat and drink. So today I'm sharing where to stay.

HOTEL VALLEY HO

Hotel Valley Ho has been open since the 1950s and is the epitome of retro-chic. With classically cool roots, it stands as a modernist icon in Downtown Scottsdale. In its heyday, it was a true Hollywood hideaway to stars like Bing Crosby, Tony Curtis and many others.

Today, Hotel Valley Ho rooms and suites are cool and classic with a chic, modern twist. Each room is outfitted with floor-to-ceiling glass, uniquely Arizona artwork, and totally mod decor (we loved our apartment style suite with sweeping views of Camelback Mountain.) Aside from loving the general hotel aesthetic, the service was impeccable (and perhaps it was just me, but it seemed every employee was really attractive. No complaints here).

But my favorite part of the hotel? Hands down the pool. Here, you can relax in a colorful chaise lounge, cool off in a private cabana or take a dip in the pool and hot tubs. Enjoy handcrafted cocktails (we sure did) and light fare like sandwiches or salads, and you won't need to leave all day.  Surrounded by palm trees, colorful decor and great music-- the Hotel Valley Ho pool is a vibrant oasis in the middle of the desert.

I had such a great time at Hotel Valley Ho and have recommended it to several friends already (who also had a fantastic experience). If you're looking for an experience with no shortage of fun and where luxury meets laid back -- look no further than Hotel Valley Ho .

THE SCOTT RESORT & SPA

If you're wanting to find a blend of the upscale appeal of a downtown Scottsdale property, but also the casual elegance of a lush desert retreat, consider The Scott Resort & Spa.

This lavishly landscaped property offers a bright + breezy pool by day and romantic fire pits at night. All of the hotel accommodations are designed with comfort + convenience in mind (I've never seen a more extensive menu of mini-bar options).

Also on property, The Scott Grill is an acclaimed restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails with Mediterranean-inspired simplicity and coastal Italian flair. We went for dinner and loved everything we tried. Prior to our meal, we enjoyed some treatments at The Scott's Jurlique Spa- complete with six private sun-washed treatment rooms.

While The Scott offers so many amenities of a resort you'd never leave during your vacation, it's proximity also puts you in the heart of Scottsdale's world-class golf courses, shopping, dining, art galleries, MLB Spring Training and outdoor recreation framed by spectacular natural scenery. So no matter what brings you to Scottsdale, you'll easily find yourself at home staying at The Scott.

FOUR SEASONS TROON NORTH SCOTTSDALE

Nestled into the foothills of Pinnacle Peak and amid towering saguaro cacti, you'll find the adobe casitas that make up Four Seasons Troon North. This Scottsdale resort embodies the desert's magic through thoughtful design and the outstanding talent of local artisans.

Yesterday I touched on Proof- the restaurant at Four Seasons Troon North. And while the restaurant is truly spectacular (not to mention someplace I'd recommend no matter where you stay) this property has way more to offer than delicious food.

When I first arrived to the property, I went to the spa for their unique "Sticks and Stones" massage (incorporating bamboo sticks and hot stones to ease muscle tension and sore joints). All spa products are inspired by the ingredients of the desert to give a custom "Scottsdale" experience. And while the treatment itself was fantastic, so was the entire facility. I lounged around for a bit after my treatment before heading upstairs to lunch (and I certainly took my sweet time getting ready).

The entire property is stunning and so enjoyable to wander around with no agenda. Every detail from small to large is carefully selected to flawlessly blend with the surrounding environment. If you choose to stay here, the guest rooms include patio doors that open to magnificent desert views (I mean, I could sit here all day).

I've had nothing but wonderful experiences at every Four Seasons property that I've visited (which is several now). They're always a sure-fire crowd pleaser as they seamlessly blend premium quality, luxury amenities, and impeccable customer service (all while still feeling approachable and not too stuffy). If you're looking for a resort destination to retreat to that's tucked away from the hustle + bustle of Scottsdale- consider Four Seasons at Troon North.

THE SAGUARO: SCOTTSDALE

Also mentioned as a recommended meal yesterday, The Saguaro is another great hotel option in Scottsdale. While I didn't stay here or spend much time besides lunch, I can speak from personal experience from my stay in Palm Springs (more to come on that later) that The Saguaro is a lively, vibrant and fun place to stay. Of the hotels listed above, I'd say it most closely compares to Hotel Valley Ho (although I'm sure the two have several differences to consider while booking!)

So there you have it! You've got options no matter if you're looking for a fun, energetic hotel in the heart of Scottsdale, a luxury resort to retreat to, or something in between the two. All of these properties are places I'd recommend based on my personal visits and experiences and I'm confident they'll give you a trip you'll love.

Stay tuned later this week, because we're not quite done talking about Scottsdale. Next up: all the great things to do! Until then, have a great Wednesday, friends!

Scottsdale Travel Guide: Best Food + Drinks

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK IN SCOTTSDALE AZ
SCOTTSDALE AZ

Happy Monday! My road trip is officially coming to a close as I head back home to Nashville today. Life has been a whirlwind these past six weeks and I'm so excited to finally sit down and share so many incredible places with you guys! It's my hope that it will inspire you to plan some adventures of your own.

I've already shared two of my three Arizona stops (Sedona and The Grand Canyon) so today, let's start discussing Scottsdale. Whether you want to relax and be pampered, get outdoors and explore, or eat and drink with friends-- this vibrant desert town has something for everyone.

For all intents and purposes, I wanted to split this destination into a few posts based on various interests. So let's start with something we can all agree on: food + drinks. MAN, Scottsdale excels in this department. Not only was everything that I experienced delicious, but the atmosphere of each location slayed.

THE SAGUARO HOTEL

Lunch at The Saguaro was our very first action item when we rolled into Scottsdale. It piqued my interest while doing some research on the area because I had already booked a room at their Palm Springs location for another trip I had a few weeks later. Naturally, any hotel that's a rainbow of colors is bound to grab your attention, but this place lives up to the hype. Both Saguaro properties (Scottsdale and Palm Springs- which I'll get to in a few weeks) were vibrant, Modernist, light-hearted and fun. So regardless of wherever you decide to stay in Scottsdale, be sure you at least pop in here for some food + drinks so you can gush over this property.

The cocktails (which are as vibrant as the hotel surroundings) were delicious. We loved the Jungle Bird (Campari, rum, pineapple juice, lime + simple syrup) and the Oaxaca Old Fashioned (Reposado tequila, mezcal, agave + angostura bitters).

Since I have to keep some balance and not always overeat whilst traveling, we stuck with salads to share for our main course. Both the Big Kale (complete with quinoa, cranberries, almonds, tomato, watermelon radish + champagne vinaigrette) and the Seafood Cobb  (including shrimp, crab, blue cheese, mango, avocado, bacon, tomato, egg + balsamic vinaigrette) were light, fresh and delicious.

And since we were like, super healthy- we treated ourselves to some chips and guac too (because that's always worth every calorie, am I right?)

Stay tuned for more about The Saguaro hotel + pool later this week when we discuss places to stay...

If I ever say no to great Mexican food, it's a day for the history books. I'm also *shamelessly* a sucker for any business with great decor + branding (my Insta feed does a happy dance whenever I stumble upon these spots). Couple the two, and you've got Diego Pops: a modern Mexican diner in the heart of downtown Scottsdale that offers a tropical + cosmopolitan twist. We arrived during happy hour and the bar was buzzing with people sipping on some of the most beautiful cocktails I've ever seen.

Not only is the aesthetic of the decor and drinks lovely, but the food will rock your world. Try a variety of the delicious taco flavors like Braised Pineapple Pork, Beef Machacha or Green Chili Chicken. For sides, I loved their unique options like fried plantains, jicama + cucumber and coconut rice. But my hands down favorite option of everything we tried were the Brussels Sprout Nachos (tortilla chips topped with brussels sprouts,  street corn queso, queso Oaxaca, fresno chili, pickled onion, roasted garlic beet crema and a fried egg.) These were gone in a flash and my friend and I both agreed we would eat these until our stomach exploded.

After needing to be rolled out of the restaurant after our meal, we all but begged Cory (the restaurant manager and our new friend) to open another location in Nashville. We assured him that someplace with such great ambiance, food and reasonable prices wouldn't ever have an empty seat if opened in our city (although he certainly wasn't having an issue with too many vacant chairs in Scottsdale either). I'm crossing my fingers (and my toes) that he'll take our piece of advice.

Start with the Pretzel Knots + Spicy Cheese Sauce or the Mango-Coconut Ahi Poke with Pineapple, Kimchee, Sesame, Avocado, Yuzu-Ginger Ponzu and Sweet Potato Chips. For your main, try a salad with delicious Arizona Grown veggies, or if you're in the mood for something a bit heartier, try Smoked Babe on a Bun (which has 5 Hour Slow Cooked Pork and House Made Pickles on a pretzel bun). And be sure to save room for dessert, because the S'mores Sunday with chocolate fudge ripple ice cream, chocolate sauce, graham crackers and vanilla marshmallows will leave you with a full belly and a smile on your face.

I'll speak more about my time at this property in some of the Scottsdale posts to come, but dining at Proof is something everyone should do regardless of where you stay. Not only is the property gorgeous and the views sweeping, but the service and quality of food at every Four Seasons restaurant I've ever dined in is truly exceptional and worth experiencing for yourself.

These are my 3 top picks for a delicious meal whilst visiting Scottsdale, but I've no doubt there are plenty more. Another place I know to be amazing? ZuZu Restaurant at Hotel Valley Ho (we only were able to eat breakfast here due to some scheduling conflicts but it was so delicious!) I have lots more to say about this particular property, which I'll touch on later this week when we talk about the best hotels and pools in Scottsdale- stay tuned!

Until then, I am heading home! Can't wait to squeeze my friends AND meet my family's new puppy they got while I was gone (I mean, how cute is he!?)

Have a great Monday, friends!

Grand Canyon Jeep Tour

BEST WAY TO SEE THE GRAND CANYON

Happy Monday! I'm slowly working my way back home to Nashville this week after 5 jam-packed weeks of travel, and I'm so excited to start sharing these adventures here on the blog! I've already posted about my time in Sedona so today I'm dishing on it's neighboring attraction (not to mention one of the most popular ones in the U.S.) the Grand Canyon.

No matter how much you know about this natural wonder, nothing can adequately prepare you for seeing it yourself. Coming here was actually what inspired this entire road trip I'm currently on. After traveling Europe for 4.5 months, I realized how many incredible places in my own country I hadn't seen (the Grand Canyon being at the top of the list). But as I started to do my research, I realized there are dozens of ways that over 5 million visitors choose to see it each year. So which option do you pick? Driving? Hiking? Mules? Helicopters? The options are overwhelming.

While mules sounded unique and helicopters sounded luxurious, I realized that personally, my main focus of seeing the Grand Canyon this first time was to be able to simply marvel at it with no distractions (although I totally would do both of those things next time I go back!) So once I decided I wouldn't have to stress falling off a donkey or be snapping selfies in a helicopter, I began to narrow my search. I was looking for a (small group) tour with a guide who could educate me and take me to the best viewpoints. And that's exactly what I found.

PINK JEEP TOURS: GRAND CANYON

Pink Jeep Tours is the longest running, and the largest off-road adventure company in the US. Based in Sedona, they also offer tours there, in Las Vegas and obviously, the Grand Canyon. Trademarked by superior customer service, environmental responsibility and a top-tier commitment to guide education and passenger safety, Pink® Adventure Group welcomes more than 300,000 guests annually to experience an adventure they will not soon forget. While they offer several tour options, we did the Grand Finale Deluxe Tour, which is a 3 hour experience that takes you to the best viewpoints along the South Rim, ending while you watch the sunset.

We hopped in our open-air Jeep (don't worry, it has insulated flaps and heat for days when it's cold) and set out to chase the best views of the canyon. It happened to be an extremely cloudy day, and we were all nervous that the could cover would block any chance of a view. Luckily, this wasn't our guide's first rodeo. As he monitored the cloud motion he signaled for us to jump back in the Jeep before zooming off to the next lookout to beat the clouds. While a bright + sunny day is ideal, I was so thankful to be with someone who knew the park so well and could navigate us around to make sure we had the best views possible. Once we escaped the dense fog, I'd argue the clouds made for an even cooler moody + etherial view than you would typically get.

Pink Jeeps was a great way to see the Canyon for the first time and I'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting a care-free experience with the best views available.

I don't think you'll ever really be able to appreciate the magnitude of the Grand Canyon, which makes it easy to justify going back. Now that I've been, here are a few things I'd advise before visiting (and things I'll keep in mind before I return!)

  • Factor the weather whilst planning your trip. You should always plan on a variety of climates so if possible, have a flexible itinerary so you can swap days around if the conditions aren't optimal.

  • Summer is the most popular season. While it offers the best weather conditions, it also means you should prepare yourself for large crowds if you choose to go then.

  • The majority of visitors visit the South Rim (arguably the most beautiful views, more lodging options and visitor services available). The South Rim is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

  • Park entrance is $25 per private vehicle (this is included in the the price of your Pink Jeeps Tour).

  • If you're staying longer than a day, be sure to check out some other ways to see the Canyon, including: helicopter tours, camping, hiking, or mule rides.

Have you had an amazing experience at the Grand Canyon another way that's not mentioned above? Let me know in the comments below!

I'm hopping in the car + heading to another destination now, but stay tuned for more travel guides coming to the blog soon. In the meantime, have a great week friends!
