This Week in the World: Week 30

It’s been a wonderful three weeks in Italy: both revisiting some favorite places and exploring some new ones. After a year (plus some change) of not being able to travel or do my job, it felt surreal to be back in my favorite country— face to face with vendors I adore and drinking in these places I love so much. After our 5 day quarantine in Tuscany, we visited Ischia, Capri, Positano/Praiano, Rome, the Dolomites and Milan. It was a lot packed into 3 weeks, but I’ve never been so thankful to be exhausted. It was a wonderful experience that felt very safe, and I’d encourage anyone who is able to take advantage of visiting before tourism ramps up to full capacity (or likely, even more than before due to so many holidays that will need to be rebooked).

• I was excited to read this story on South Tyrol coming out of my trip there - I couldn’t agree more!: ‘Forget the skis. In the South Tyrol region near the Dolomites, delicious food and gorgeous hikes are best enjoyed in summer.’

• Traveling to France soon? Here’s what you need to know about health passport requirements in France (effective as of July 21st).

WEEKLY FAVORITES

• FAVORITE LISTEN: I seem to share a “Life Kit” podcast episode every week, and this one is no exception! I really enjoyed this episode on “Cleaning up Your Social Media Diet.”

• FAVORITE SAVE: I love what this Instagram post has to say about being “cool”.

• FAVORITE PURCHASE: This slip dress from one of my favorite retailers is a perfect timeless staple that’s great for summer weather. I wore it a ton in Italy (with espadrilles and statement earrings (I love these ones made from recycled glass) to dress it up, or sandals and a wide brim hat for a more casual daytime look).

• FAVORITE READ: “How I learned to really listen to people”.

AROUND THE WORLD

• The beds in Tokyo’s Olympic Village are made of cardboard-the first time in Olympic history that athletes’ beds are made almost entirely out of renewable materials. The beds are part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games’ broader sustainability plan, which seeks to ensure the environment is at the heart of the event.

• Prince George turned 8 this week!

• Jane Goodall reveals what studying chimpanzees teaches us about human nature.

• The argument for switching off lights at night: why light pollution is harming our wildlife.

This Week in the World: Week 29

Buongiorno from Italy! I took the week off last weekend (skipped This Week in the World for the first time this year!) so that I could take a proper holiday and enjoy time with some friends I haven’t seen since before COVID. This trip is almost 3 weeks long and we are covering a lot of the main region my clients request: Tuscany, Amalfi Coast, Rome, the Dolomites and the lakes (still deciding if we are doing Como, Garda or another one!) We are keeping very busy but it feels so incredible to be back in one of my favorite places in the world. TRAVEL NEWS, UPDATES + INSPIRATION

• First, I’m excited to share an exciting change to my travel planning services: I recently joined the Embark Beyond team, which means I’ll now have access to a wide range of benefits for my clients (things like spa credits, complimentary upgrades upon availability, breakfast inclusions, welcome amenities, etc.) I’ve been an independent travel planner as long as I’ve been in the industry, but as I’ve seen my clients needs evolve over time, I’m so excited to be joining a team that I know will help me to better serve them and be stronger at my job. So if you’re thinking of booking a trip soon, be sure to contact me for travel planning assistance so I can help you get the most out of your trip!

• If you’ve been wanting to go to Canada, you’re in luck! Starting mid-August, fully vaccinated Americans will be able to visit.

• Venice is at risk of being added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage in Danger sites because of how cruise ships threaten the delicate marine environment and overwhelm the city with thousands of day-trippers. Finally, something is finally happening to protect it. Starting August 1st, Italy is banning mammoth cruise ships from Venice.

• Many people are still unclear about where they can and can’t travel right now. I found this comprehensive guide to where Americans can travel in Europe to be helpful.

FAVORITE LISTENS

I’ve spent a lot of time with headphones in over the last couple of weeks (especially on planes, trains and while beachside) so I thought I’d dedicate a section this week to some of what I’ve really enjoyed:

• Life Kit: This is one of my favorite podcasts because it’s quick and easily-digestible tips for life in general. Some episodes I’ve loved lately include: “How to Host”, “How to Use Less Plastic”, “How to Find Art You Love for Your Space” and “Retirement 101: How to Save What You Need.”

• Worldly: I have always loved listening to Vox’s “Worldly” podcast for a deep dive and easy-to-understand explanation of complex issues. This last week, I enjoyed listening to their “Cuba Libre” episode (a lot of you have sent me links to what is happening in Cuba, and this episode helped me wrap my head around it a bit more). Keeping up with global issues can be difficult when traveling (striking a healthy balance between staying informed and also giving yourself some time to unplug) so I appreciated how easy it was to listen to this episode on a train ride and feel a bit more in-the-know.

• Women Who Travel: I really enjoyed this interview with Cristina Mittermeier: a marine biologist, conservationist, photographer and co-founder of SeaLegacy (a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the ocean). If you are wanting to educate yourself about the ocean, while also overcoming feeling hopeless about the current climate crisis, this is a great listen.

• Less informative than the episodes above, but I was SO excited to find out that Franco’s Bar (my favorite spot for drinks in Positano) has their own playlist! If you’ve been to Franco’s you know what a vibe it is, and I’ve previously commented on how much I love their music. So if you’re wanting to pretend like you’re sipping cocktails in Positano to tie you over until you can actually visit, set this playlist as your soundtrack… it’s so good!

AROUND THE WORLD:

• You’ve likely read about the catastrophic floods in Germany. The intensity and scale of these floods have shocked climate scientists, who didn’t expect records to be broken this much, over such a wide area or this soon. It’s deeply concerning, and should be a wake up call for all of us to prioritize our commitment to deescalating climate change. I enjoyed (surprise! another podcast!) re-listening to THIS EPISODE from years ago called “Pale Blue Dot” that I think helps you wrap your head around the urgency (and also provides counter-arguments to those who may not take it as seriously as they should).

• The Tokyo Olympics are about to begin. The games taking place have been controversial (more here) but nevertheless, if you’re looking for some athletes to support I enjoyed reading this article of who to watch.

• Ready or not, tomorrow is Freedom Day in the UK (meaning all restrictions are lifting). While cases are rising, it’s still to be determined what impact this will have on hospitalizations. Everyone is hoping that the vaccination program will overpower any surge in overwhelming the NHS or a surge in deaths… only time will tell.

• The Eiffel Tower has been closed for renovations, but finally greeted tourists on Friday for the first time in nearly nine months!

Finally, I’m ending with a few favorites (all but the second hat are sustainable!) I’ve been wearing non-stop while here in Italy:

• This hat and this hat have been in constant rotation for sun protection on my face.

• This small half-moon cross body bag in orange is the perfect pop of color for summer and I’ve worn it to dinner most nights on this trip.

• These shoes (which I’ve shared before!) are my absolute favorites for summer or warm-weather destinations. I walk miles in these (but you do need to break them in first!)

THIS WEEK IN THE WORLD: WEEK 27

Hello, and Happy 4th of July from the Peak District! While it certainly isn’t the most patriotic place to celebrate America, I’m excited to be here for a quick weekend trip to see some of the natural beauty of this region (and to finally visit the famous Chatsworth House after wanting to for years!) Chatsworth has been in the Cavendish family for 16+ generations, and is rich in history. I’m currently reading a short memoir titled “School Days at Chatsworth” which details a period during the war when it was even converted into a boarding school. In more recent years, Chatsworth was where the 2005 “Pride and Prejudice” was filmed (it was Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s home). It’s an absolutely stunning estate with so much fascinating history- I highly recommend making the trip up here if you can!

• A statue of Princess Diana was unveiled in Kensington Gardens this week in honor of what would have been her 60th birthday.

• Norway is introducing a law making influencers declare retouched pics on social media, to help challenge unrealistic beauty standards.

• Capri and Procida: A Tale of Two Islands.

• There are four teams remaining in the Euros. This week, England will play Denmark and then Italy will play Spain. The winners of those two games will go head to head in the final. Personally, I am hoping Italy and England go all the way (as I’ll be in Italy during the finals!)

WEEKLY FAVORITES

• FAVORITE LISTEN: I recently discovered “The Argument”, a podcast that showcases open minded debates and facilitates critical thinking. I highly recommend if you enjoy stretching your worldview and hearing multiple points of view.

• FAVORITE READ: As Wimbledon is well underway, I loved reading this story of how three-time champion Chris Evert helped to give the tennis bracelet its name.

• FAVORITE FIND: I have been wanting a bust for my mantle for a while, but wanted to get one with some meaning and not just order any one from a major retailer. So at Chatsworth, I treated myself to this Veiled Vestal Virgin bust. You can actually order it online from the Chatsworth gift shop if you’d rather support a historic home than a big box retailer (plus, it’s also a nice piece if you’re a “Pride and Prejudice” film lover). I love that anytime I see it in my home I’ll remember my trip to Chatsworth!
